Solution for Extend Volume Greyed Out in Windows 7

Problems of Windows7 hard disk

C drive is always used to install operating system, such as Windows7 or Win8. The problem is the size of it will be full again in a few weeks after deleting the unnecessary files in it. So we need to find a way to extend partition. When browsing various kinds of partition blogs and forums, we can find many questions:

Question1: My system partition is almost full, while D drive has a large free space. So I want to extend C drive with Win7 Disk Management. But, the "Extend Volume" is not available. Who can tell me how to do it?

Question2: I have a 10GB unallocated space that behind D drive in Win7, and I want to add it to C volume. However, when I right click on C, the "Extend Volume" greyed out.

Different from Windows2000 and XP, Windows 7 built-in Disk Management brings two new features "Extend Volume" and "Shrink Volume". But the new functions can only work in some special cases.

For example, if there is an unallocated space behind the partition that we want to extend, then the extending function is available, if not, the "Extend Volume" will greyed out. In this case, the only way to extend C drive is to delete D to generate an unallocated space. Before deleting it, we have to backup data, which is time-consuming and risky if there is some important information we forget to backup. So the best solution is to find a safe and easy-to-use partition software to extend volume without deleting, such as AOMEI Partition Assistant.

Available software to extend volume in Windows 7

AOMEI Partition Assistant is a powerful and easy-to-use tool for managing disks and volumes. With a comprehensive set of operations, we can organize our hard drive disk well and keep our data safe. This software has a wonderful function that is "Move Partition", which allows us to change the location of the volumes. For example, when there is an unallocated space on the disk that behind D drive, and we want to use it to extend C volume. Then we can use this function to move the unallocated space to behind C and extend it. Therefore, the "extend volume greyed out" problem can be solved. We can take a look at the main interface of AOMEO software through the following screenshot.
