How to Move Free Space from One Partition to Another in Windows 7?

Generally speaking, after partitioning a hard drive, we cannot make full use of every partition or the whole disk space. As a result, sometimes you may find that one or two partition is almost empty, typically D drive, but some partition is nearly out of space, especially C drive. In such case, how to move free space from D drive to C drive in Windows 7? Is there any way to move unallocated space without formatting hard drive and re-installing Windows?

It is well-known that resize feature (Extend/Shrink Volume) has been added on Windows 7 Disk Management. However, this function could only help you realize some simple partition operations.

Move free space with Disk Management in Windows 7

As you see in this example, there are three partitions and some free space. The built-in Disk Management could only help us move free space to D drive. Right-click on D drive and select "Extend volume", then follow the wizard. After a few button clicks, the free space will be added into D drive. However, if you want to move free space to C drive, you may find "Extend Volume" grayed out.

This situation is caused by Disk Management limitations, it could only move the free space to the contiguous partition (partition must be at the left side of the free space). In this case, Disk Management could not span partition to move free space.
