To format a hard drive means to delete any information on the drive and set up a new file system so operating system can read from it and write data on it.
Computer virus, adding additional drives or selling your computer may require you to format the hard drive on your computer. You need to back up the important data before starting the formatting process, because the data will be inaccessible after the format.
