Question: I got a SSD, where I wanted to migrate my Windows 7 system partition, but I cannot get it to work. I used Norton ghost and Clonezilla for cloning my system partition, but when I try to boot from my new drive, I get message to repair the installation. Problem is, when I boot, it won't find the installation on my drive. Any ideas, or tips how to migrate the whole system partition onto the new drive?
Answer: Clone Windows 7 partition with the latest partition magic for windows 7-Partition Assistant which enables you to clone all sectors of the partition and boot from the target disk.
Sometimes a need arises where you have to backup the content of a small old partition and move it to a bigger new space. And when purchasing a new hard drive, you wish to upgrade your windows 7 small old slow hard drive. In such cases, you need to clone the old partition and make an exact duplicate of it.
There are two copy methods for users to choose:
"Copy Partition Quickly", also called File-by-File Copy, only copy the used space of the partition, and support to resize partition in order to fit the target partition.
"Sector-by-Sector Copy" enables users to copy all sectors of the partition (deleted, lost files and inaccessible data), no matter whether it is used or not.
Only an unallocated space can be used as the target place. If there is no unallocated space, you need to delete or shrink one partition to create some unallocated space with Partition Assistant.
Based on different copy methods, the size of unallocated space must match with source partition you want to copy. If you select "Copy Partition Quickly", the unallocated space may not be larger than the source partition but must be equal or larger than the used space on source partition. If you select "Sector-by-Sector Copy", the unallocated space must be equal or larger than the source partition.
If there are already four primary partitions and an unallocated space on the target disk, then the unallocated space can not be used as the target place. If there are already three primary partitions and one logical partition on the target disk, then the partition only can be created as logical partition, in other words, when you clone Windows 7 system boot partition, you cannot set the partition as active and ensure bootable.
